Field Hockey Drops Non-Conference Tilt to No. 12 Williams

The Smith College field hockey team was upended by No. 12 Williams College, 3-0, Wednesday evening in non-conference action. The loss drops the Pioneers to 2-4 while the Ephs improve to 4-1 this season.

The first half began with strong shots by senior Alex Bennett and junior Julia Cochran battled off by Pioneer goalie Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa). Libby Dolan opened the scoring for Ephs at the 18:04 mark. In the closing minutes of the half, Molly Lohss netter her first collegiate goal to double Williams' lead.

In the second half, the Ephs quickly attacked with a 39:57 goal by Cochran assisted by Bennett. Williams totaled 3 shots on goal, 2 defended by goalie Tietje. The Ephs kept strong through the back half of the game, forcing another 5 penalty corners.

Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and Neva Richardson (Rehoboth Beach, Del./St. Andrews School) each registered a shot on goal for the Pioneers.

Senior goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made eight saves while Abby Llyod stopped two shots in 35 minutes of action. Llyod was replaced in the second half by Emma Santucci who did not have to register a save.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GOAL: WILLIAMS 1, SMITH 0 – 18:04 - Libby Dolan found the back of the net for the first goal of the game.
GOAL: WILLIAMS 2, SMITH 0 - 32:57 - First-year Molly Lohss netted her first collegiate goal assisted by junior Libby Dolan.
GOAL: WILLIAMS 3, SMITH 0 - 39:57 - Alex Bennett connected with Julia Cochran for the final tally of the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Williams held an advantage in shots (19-4) and in corners (14-3).
  • The Ephs now lead the all-time series 26-4-1.

The Pioneers return to NEWMAC action when Smith heads to Wellesley for a 12:00 p.m. matchup with the Blue.
