Swimming and Diving Comes Up Short at Wellesley, 200-99

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, KS/) and Desi Stoyanova each posted first place finishes in two events, but it was not enough as the Smith College swimming and diving team suffered a 200-99 loss to to Wellesley College Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool. With the win, the Blue improve to 5-3 in dual meets, while the Pioneers drop to 1-5 on the season.

RESULTS

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Smith began the meet with a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay as Katherine Anderson (Willamsburg, MA/), Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, CA/), Desi stoyanova, and Maddy Meadows-McDonnell (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) posted a time of 2:03.32.
  • Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, KS/) cruised to the top time in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 11:19.39, more than 21 seconds ahead of the next finisher.
  • In the 100-yard backstroke, Crandall and Meadows-McDonnell placed second and third with times of 1:06.35 and 1:08.03, respectively.
  • Stoyanova earned her first victory of the meet in the 200-yard butterfly, posting a time of 2:19.07 followed by Abby Bergman (Culver City, Calif./Vistamar)'s third place mark of 2:26.29.
  • Crandall continued to impress as she placed first in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:18.23, while Stoyanova was the top finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:38.64.
  • In the 200-yard individual medley, Stoyanova touched the wall in second with a time of 2:22.26.
  • The Pioneers closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay from the foursome of Crandall, Anderson, Nell Tarno (Moretown, VT/), and Meadows-McDonnell.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the opening event of the meet, Elly Stone produced a runner-up score of 265.90 on the 1-meter followed by Hannah Searles (Newton, Mass./Newton North)' fourth place mark of 191.30.
  • The duo replicated their second and fourth place finishes on the 3-meter board. Stone earned a score of 273.00 and Searles earned a 219.25.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers will compete at the annual Seven Sisters Championship next weekend, January 20-21, at Mount Holyoke.
