Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Falls at No. 20 Amherst, 4-0

AMHERST, Mass. - Four different Mammoths found the back of the net as the No. 20 Amherst College field hockey team defeated Smith, 4-0 Thursday evening at Gooding Field. With the win, Amherst improves to 9-4 on the season, while Smith falls to 9-6 overall.

HOW THEY SCORED

14:36 - AMHERST -
Converting on a corner opportunity, Beth Williamson powered the insertion pass from Laura Schwartzman off a defender's stick and into the top right corner of the net.

37:42 - AMHERST - Kendall Codey gathered a dish from Shannon Tierney and rifled a low shot through traffic pas the Pioneers' keeper.

54:55 - AMHERST - Natalie Hobbs gathered the ball near midfield, cut back on a Smith player and dribbled 50 yards downfield with a defender on her heels before sliding a shot over the goal line.

64:15 - AMHERST - Tierney buried the rebound after Smith goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) got her pad on a shot from the top right of the arc.

Holding Smith's deficit at two, Cornell came up with a big stop for the Pioneers with 21:04 remaining on the clock, turning away a reverse shot by Franny Daniels with her blocker after the ball made its way out of a scrum and to Daniels on the left post.

Keeping up the pressure, Hobbs nearly found the back of the net once again six minutes later as she sent a perfectly placed shot from the left side toward the far post, however Jessica Jacinto (Oceanside, Calif./Mission Vista) came up with an impressive defensive save to rob a Mammoths score.

NOTABLE
  • Cornell made eight saves in the loss.
  • Amherst owned a convincing edge in both shots and penalty corners, 21-2 and 6-2, respectively.
  • The Mammoths improve to 30-10-3 all-time against the Pioneers.
