SALISBURY, Md. - The Smith College field hockey team faced No. 4 Tufts in the second round of the 2018 NCAA DIvision III Field Hockey Tournament, falling to the Jumbos 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium on the campus of Salisbury University.
With the win, the Jumbos (17-2) advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament and will play tomorrow against host Salisbury at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers' season comes to an end, finishing the season with a 15-8 record.
HOW THEY SCORED
16:10 - TUFTS - Alexis Chauvette put a shot towards Smith goalkeeper
Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) that was deflected off the stick of a Pioneer and slipped into the back of the cage for a 1-0 Jumbo lead.
17:14 - TUFTS - Marguerite Salamone from the right side of the field drilled a shot that was saved by Cornell, producing a rebound right in front. Hanaa Malik was perfectly positioned, gathered the rebound and put it past Cornell for a 2-0 advantage.
57:33 - TUFTS - The Jumbos took advantage of a Pioneer turnover in their defensive end and Salamone ripped a shot from the top of the circle that slipped by Cornell for a 3-0 lead.
NOTABLE
- Tufts nearly got on the board early in the first half but senior Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) was positioned well and cleared the ball out for a defensive save.
- After a first-half dominated by the Jumbos, the Smith defense locked in and limited the fourth-ranked team to just five shots in the second half and four corners.
- Junior Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) had Smith's best chance to score but her lifted shot in the air was stopped by netminder Emma Smith.
- Cornell made eight saves for the Pioneers, while Tufts keeper Andie Stallman stopped two in 61:49 minutes of action. Emma Smith made one save in 8:11 mintues of action.
- The Jumbos held advantages in shots (17-5) and penalty corners (16-4).
- Tufts improves to 3-0 all-time against the Pioneers.
- The Pioneers record their best overall record since the 1993 season and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history.
