Swimming and Diving Clipped by Westfield State, 155-144

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Smith College swimming and diving team won eight events but it was not enough as Westfield State earned a 155-144 win over the Pioneers Saturday afternoon at Ely Pool. Smith is now 3-5 in dual meets this season.

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pioneers got things going in the 200 -yard medley as Katherine Anderson (Williamsburg, Mass./The Academy at Charlemont), Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell), Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Panther Creek), and Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville) finished second with a time of 2:02.60.
  • Sophomore Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) cruised to victories in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:42.44) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:40.48).
  • Senior Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/English Language) claimed wins in the 200-yard free (2:10.80) and the 200-yard fly (2:34.23) and was the runner-up in the 200-yard breast (2:45.45).
  • Sophomore Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Panther Creek) touched the wall first in the 50-yard free (26.71) and the 50-yard fly (28.50).
  • In the final event of the afternoon, the team of Nesmith, Tjasa Kmetec (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn), Crandall and Torre-Nieto won by more than 15 seconds in the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:59.17.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Once again, senior Julianna Alvord (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) was the top finisher for the Pioneers on both the 1-meter and 3-meter. On the 1-meter, Alvord took first place with a score of  214.65 points and followed that up with a second place performance on the 3-meter with 160.70 points.
  • Sophomore Lauren Low (New Haven, Conn./Engineering & Science University Magnet) claimed fourth on the 1-meter (150.25) and the 3-meter (148.15).
  • Chang earned fifth on the 3-meter with a score of 137.60.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers will be idle for the next two weeks to prepare for the Hamilton College Invitational on November 30 and December 1.
