Swimming and Diving Picks Up First Win of Season Against Babson

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Smith College swimming and diving team competed in a series of dual meets at WPI on Friday evening. The Pioneers defeated Babson 187-100 but fell to the host Engineers (249-59), Brandeis (203.5-92.5), and Simmons (212.5-87.5).

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Aidan Coffin Ness (Madison, Wisc./Madison East) collected a fifth place finish in the 1000-yard free with a time of 12:06.44.
  • In the 200-yard free, sophomore Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) placed ninth in 2:07.85.
  • The 200-yard fly saw senior Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/English Language) finish sixth in 2:25.48.
  • Sophomore Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Panther Creek) sprinted to a sixth place time of 26.63 in the 50-yard free. 
  • Stoyanova took the ninth spot in the 200-yard back in 2:24.18 and third in the 400 IM in 5:05.75.
  • Crandall posted a sixth place time of 5:41.90 in the 500-yard free.
  • Torre-Nieto claimed the ninth spot in the 100-yard fly in 1:05.54
  • The team of Torre-Nieto, Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville), Katherine Anderson (Williamsburg, Mass./The Academy at Charlemont), and Crandall finished the 200-yard free relay with a fourth place time of 1:48.28.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Senior Julianna Alvord (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional) won the 1-meter event with a score of 200.85.
  • First-year Hannah Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) (151.00) and sophomore Maya Younoszai (Denver, Colo./Denver East) (121.40) posted top-10 scores on the 1-meter.
  • In the 3-meter, Chang earned the top spot for the Pioneers with a sixth place score of 156.20 followed by Younoszai and sophomore Lauren Low (New Haven, Conn./Engineering & Science University Magnet) who rounded out the top-10.

Smith will host Springfield College on Tuesday, November 6 at Dalton Pool at 7:00 p.m.
