Swimming & Diving Earns Senior Day Win Over Mount Holyoke

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College swimming and diving team won 12 of the possible 16 events en route to a 186-114 victory over Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon at Dalton Pool. Of the 12 event winners, Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, KS/) and Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/) had three individual victories apiece. Prior to the meet, Smith honored their five seniors: Abby Bergman (Culver City, Calif./Vistamar), Maddy Meadows-McDonnell (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central)Hannah Searles (Newton, Mass./Newton North), Sophie Shapiro (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bard High School Early College II), and Elly Stone (Westborough, Mass./Westborough)

RESULTS

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kicking things off in the 400 medley relay, the team of Katherine Anderson (Willamsburg, MA/), Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, CA/), Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/), and Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, PR/) combined for a runner-up time of 4:29.57.
  • Crandall earned her first victory of the day in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:24.84.
  • Maddy Meadows-McDonnell emerged victorious in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 1:06.82, before Taniguchi earned a win in the 100 breaststroke, touching in 1:15.86.
  • Stoyanova earned her second win of the meet with a time of 2:19.75 in the 200 butterfly, while Torre-Nieto sprinted to a first place finish in the 50 freestyle in 26:68.
  • Crandall continued her impressive meet as the first-year claimed the top spot in the 200 backstroke (2:20.45) and 500 freestyle (5:34.32).
  • In the 200 breaststroke, Stoyanova won her second event of the day, producing a time of 2:40.12 and followed that with a first place time in the 200 IM (2:21.89).
  • The foursome of Torre-Nieto, Nell Tarno (Moretown, VT/), Meadows-McDonnell, and Crandall brought home victory for the Pioneers in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:47.39.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Elly Stone (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) won the 1-meter board with a score of 283.95, while Shoshana Werblow took second with a 265.05.
  • On the three-meter board, Stone was victorious once again with a score of 278.90, while Werblow claimed third with 254.15.

UP NEXT
The Pioneers will take the next 12 days to prepare for the NEWMAC Championships hosted by MIT February 22-25.
