NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team suffered a 7-2 defeat to Emerson College Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. With the loss, the Pioneers are now 1-10 overall and 0-4 in league play, while the Lions improve to 4-9, 0-3.
The Lions swept doubles play, but the pairs of Joanna Kim and Allison Ahern and June Lee and Emma Essenmacher put up a tough fight. Kim and Ahern fell 9-8 (8-6) to Alisha Parikh and Rachel Scalera, while Lee and Essenmacher dropped their match to Meredith Stisser and Sabrina Jacobs, 9-7 (8-4).
In singles competition, Kim earned an impressive victory at the No. 3 slot, coming back from down 1-5 in the second set to win 6-1, 7-5 over Scalera. The Pioneers earned their second point of the day at No. 1 when Samantha Peikes ousted Parikh, 6-1, 6-3.
