Handwerger's Hat Trick Sends Field Hockey Past Wheaton, 4-2

NORTON, Mass. - Junior Morgan Handwerger (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored three goals as the Smith College field hockey team opened up New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a 4-2 win over Wheaton College Saturday afternoon. Smith improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in conference with the win, while the Lyons drop to 1-3, 0-1.

HOW THEY SCORED

8' | WHEATON | 
Sophomore forward Hannah Arkin opened the scoring, beating the goalie to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead.

23' | SMITH | Handwerger found the back of the cage when she collected a rebound off a save from the Wheaton goalkeeper.

25' | SMITH | Handwerger notched her second goal of the game when she found the ball on the left side of the cage and knocked it in. 

32' | WHEATON | Michelle Connolly broke free from her defender on a breakaway up the left side of the field to beat the diving Pioneer goalkeeper and level the score at 2-2. 

38' | SMITH | Handwerger scored again to complete her hat trick just 2:05 minutes into the second half, once again off of a goalie pad rebound.

53' | SMITH | Senior Alex Larosee (Warwick, R.I./Wheeler School) recorded Smith's security goal at 52:50 after slipping the ball in through the goalie's leg pads on a penalty corner. 


NOTABLE
  • Handwerger's hat trick was the first of her career and brings her season goal total to four.
  • Larosee's goal was the first of 2018 and eighth of her career.
  • First-year goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) made one save in the victory.
  • The Pioneers owned a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal and 11-1 margin in corners.
  • Smith improves to 20-24 all-time against the Lyons.
