NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - In a back and forth battle in a crucial New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey game, MIT scored the game-winner 3:18 into overtime to earn a 3-2 win over Smith College Saturday afternoon. The meeting was a rematch of the 2018 NEWMAC Championship where the PIoneers came out on top in OT, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 5:57 - SMI - First-year Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) avoided an MIT defender and buried a reverse sweep from just inside the circle
- 23:10 - MIT - Delia Stephens connected on a pass by Devon Goetz to even the game
- 48:17 - Junior Anna Ballou (Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) dribbled through the MIT defense and pushed it to the right side of the cage
- 57:11 - Paige Forester notched her 14th goal of the season on an assist by Amanda Garofalo
- 63:18 - Devon Goetz beat Smith's lone defender and dished it off to Amanda Garofalo who one-touched it into the net for the game-winner
GAME NOTES
- Smith drops to 17-21 all-time against the Engineers
- Mellow scored her fourth goal of the season while Ballou now has three on the year
- Smith goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) made three saves in the loss
- MIT ended the afternoon with a 17-4 advantage in shots while the Pioneers held an 11-8 edge in corners
- Smith was awarded two corners in the final minute of regulation but was unable to take advantage
