THE LEAD
The Smith College field hockey team used three goals in the second half to earn a 4-2 win over Clark University in the season finale Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Granger Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 11:50 - CLK - Chase Collier took a chance from outside of the circle before Mikayla Pantano deflected the attempt into the top-left corner of the cage to give the host the first period lead.
- 14:10 - SMI - Vivian Nelseon carried the ball downthe end line before slipping in a shot up close for her sixth goal of year
- 18:26 - CLK - Kerry Lefebvre battled for possession in front of the net before a backhanded flick put the Cougars up
- 41:41 - SMI - Morgan Handwerger (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) unassisted
- 44:56 - SMI - Sammie Pavlov (Royersford, Pa./Westtown School) unassisted
- 57:04 - SMI - Handwerger wrapped around a defender to slip it in the cage
GAME NOTES
- The Pioneers improve to 14-16 all-time against the Cougars
- Smith maintained a substantial advantage in corners throughout the game, finishing with a 23-6 advantage
- The Pioneers also eclipsed the host, 27-14, on the shot chart
- Goalkeeper Taylor Wells (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Shipley School) stopped five shots in the victory
