Swimming and Diving Cruises to 162-95 Win over Colby-Sawyer

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College swimming & diving team cruised to a 162-95 win over Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon in Dalton Pool. In their first dual meet victory of the season, the Pioneers won nine events.

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Pioneers jumped out strong as the foursome of first-years Emily Woo Kee (El Paso, Tex./Coronado), Kristin Cirulli (Edgewood, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy), Grace Apodaca (Kansas City, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and Annie Wilson (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin School) notched a time of 2:02.27 to open with the victory in the 200-yard medley relay.
  • Smith continued their their first-place efforts in the 1000-yard freestyle as first-year Haley December Brown (Kewadin, Mich./Lake Highland Prepatory School) came from behind to touch the wall first in a time of 11:44.24.
  • First-year Virginia Griswold (Clarkesville, Ga./Tallulah Falls) went on to earn the win 100-yard backstroke 1:06.03.
  • In the 100-yard breastroke, junior Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville) clocked in a first place time of 1:15.66.
  • First-year Annie Wilson (Boston, Mass./Boston Latin School) cruised to victory in the 500-yard freestyle, followed by classmate Sarah Bridges (Columbia, Md./Atholton) in 5:50.84.
  • Apodaca sprinted to the top time in the 50-yard butterfly in 28.49, while Cirulli produced the fastest time in the 100-yard IM in 1:07.21.
  • In the final event of the meet, Smith's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Nell Tarno (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union), Wilson, Paula Torre-Nieto (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Panther Creek) and Nesmith just edged Colby-Sawyer with a time of 1:47.53.

DIVING RESULTS
  • The 1-meter diving event saw senior captain Shoshana Werblow (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) win with a score of 246.07. 
  • Sophomore Hannah Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) followed with a second place score of 194.56 and Nell Tarno's (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union) third place showing (174.23).
  • In the 3-meter, Werblow produced a score of 249.00, while Chang recorded a score of 182.55.
