Swimming and Diving Drops Dual Meet at Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Although Smith fell short in the score against NEWMAC rival Mt. Holyoke, 156-143, the Pioneers gave top notch performances versus the Lyons at the Mount Holyoke Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

Seventy-five percent of team performances were season best times, highlighted by Aidan Coffin-Ness' second place time of 11:43.13 in the 1000-yard freestyle. 

Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan./Free State) kept the momentum going as she posted the top time in the 200-yard freestyle (2:05.71). Also in the 200 free, Tjasa Kmetec (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) recorded a season best second place time of (2:09.82). The Pioneers consistently took top three finishes in all events throughout the meet. 

Smith seniors Julianna Alvord (Ivoryton, Conn./Valley Regional), Desi Stoyanova (Plovdiv, Bulgaria/English Language) and Jane Kuntz (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) competed in their final undergraduate dual meet with their best efforts left in the pool. Stoyanova won the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.95), finished 2nd in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.38), and 3rd in the 200-yard Individual Medley (2:22.50).

Kuntz swam a season best time in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:22.26. Teammates Junko Taniguchi (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) (2:39.83) Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville) (2:40.70) claimed the top-two spots in the 200 breast.

Going into the 1 meter diving event, the teams were tied 65-65.

On the boards, Alvord took second on the 1-meter (245.90) and third on 3 meter (225.20).

The Pioneers will turn their focus to the conference championships held February 21-24 at WPI.
