NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team began their 2019 NEWMAC schedule with a 9-0 loss to Springfield College Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers drop to 0-6 on the year and 0-1 in league play, while the Pride moves to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

• Senior Joanna Kim (Chicago, Ill./Northside College Prep) showed great versatility during her match, showing off her all-court game style.
• First-year Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) went down 5-0 in the first set and then saved three set points before dropping 6-1.
• The highlight of the day came in No. 6 singles where first-year Betsy Hillier (Cohasset, Mass./Concord Academy) went down 4-1 then battled back to make it 4-3. Trailing 5-3, she broke serve to extend the first set, but ultimately fell 6-4. Hillier jumped out to a 4-1 lead before her opponent battled back to even the set. After numerous great rallies and exceptional defensive shots, Hillier was unable to one to her lead and fell, 7-5.
