Swimming and Diving Suffers 164-126 Setback to Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Back in action for the first time in 2020, the Smith College swimming and diving team dropped a 164-126 decision to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foe, Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon at Chandler Pool. The Pioneers won six events and swept both diving events. 

SWIMMING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Kicking off the meet with the 200 yard medley relay, the team of Emily Woo Kee (El Paso, Tex./Coronado), Kristin Cirulli (Edgewood, Ky./Villa Madonna Academy), Virginia Griswold (Clarkesville, Ga./Tallulah Falls), and Paula Torre Nieto took fourth with a time of 2:03.14.
  • Next was the 1000 freestyle which was won by Haley December Brown (Kewadin, Mich./Lake Highland Prepatory School) in a time of 11:44.46, over seven seconds faster than the second-place finisher. 
  • In the 200 freestyle, Tjasa Kmetec (Palo Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) was the Pioneers' top finisher with a time of 2:12.08, while in the 50 backstroke, Nell Tarno (Moretown, Vt./Harwood Union) took third with a time of 32:48.
  • Cirulli touched second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.89, while Torre-Nieto claimed a second place time of 25:90 in the 50 free.
  • The 500 freestyle and 200 IM saw Cirulli take the top spot.
  • Wrapping up the meet, the 400 freestyle team of Charlotte Crandall (Lawrence, Kan./Free State), Sarah Bridges (Columbia, Md./Atholton), Torre-Nieto and Elisabeth Nesmith (Danville, Ky./Danville) posted a first place time of 4:05.67.

DIVING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Shoshana Werblow (Ashland, Ore./Ashland) won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 228.35 and 252.55, respectively.
  • Iris Patterson (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) posted career-best scores on both the 1-meter (3rd/176.00) and 3-meter (3rd/162.55).
  • Hannah Chang (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South) finished second on the 3-meter with a score of 165.20.

The Pioneers will return to action on Saturday, January 18 at the Mount Holyoke Invitational.
