WORCESTER, Mass.- The Smith College field hockey team had another even match up on Saturday afternoon against the WPI Engineers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pioneers and the Engineers were both able to get shots on goal in the first quarter, Pioneer goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) made 3 strong saves to keep the score even.
- The head-to-head battle continued through the second quarter with both teams remaining scoreless going into the second half.
- (32:31) - Smith 0 WPI 1 - The Engineers struck first when Eliza Dutson tipped in a rebound from a penalty corner.
- (34:40) Smith 1, WPI 1 - The Smith offense responded with fire, led by Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) and her dynamic midfield carry. Mellow's shot was saved but teammate Grace Moorhead (Cranston, R.I./The Wheeler School) was there to finish the job. It was Moorhead's fifth goal of the season.
- (43:09) Smith 1, WPI 2 - The Engineers regained the lead Eliza Dutson was set up off a penalty corner by Kellie Makechnie and scored her second goal of the match.
GAME NOTES
- The Pioneers defense continues prove their fortitude with Gwen Tuckett (Cambridge, Mass./Dana Hall School) and Kaeli Bennet standing tied for second in NEWMAC defensive saves (3).
- Goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) is not only 3rd in NEWMAC total saves (96) but has also made her way into the record books with the 8th most career saves in Pioneer history (284).
- Mellow and Moorhead continue to be productive and find success on the attacking end, they lead the Pioneers with 13 points each.
- The Pioneers' midfield speed has consistently caused problems for opposing defenses, Abbey O'Meara (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's School) and recently returned Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) combined for three shots on goal.Â
