POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing for the first time since the 2019 season, the Smith College field hockey team fell to nationally-ranked No. 18 Vassar College, 5-1, in its season opener Wednesday.

• 11th Minute (10:34) - VAS 1 SMI 0 - Sophomore Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) Maggie Werner crossed the ball from the left side of the Smith net to Avery Bauman, who then chipped the shot in for the opening goal 
• 15th Minute (14:12) - VAS 2 SMI 0 - Gianna Trunfio redirected the ball into the back of the net for her first-career goal
• 34th Minute (33:15) - VAS 3 SMI 0 - Ella Pearl redirected her own shot to back of the cage
• 40th Minute (39:41) - VAS 4 SMI 0 -  Sophie McGrath found the goal after a scramble in front of the Pioneers' net 
• 53rd Minute (52:41) - VAS 4 SMI 1 - Elena Korinek (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) inserted to Laura Dreher (Durham, N.H./Durham), who quickly passed off to Abbey O'Meara (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's School) for the goal from the top of the arc
• 56th Minute (55:02) - VAS 5 SMI 1 - Kelsey O'Connell fed a pass to Hailey Brigger at the top of the circle who one-timed the shot into the net

GAME NOTES

• The Brewers held a 27-9 shot advantage while recording 12 penalty corner attempts
• The Pioneers totaled seven corners
• Smith's goalkeeper Channy Cornell (Arlington, Tex./The Oakridge School) made 13 saves in the loss
• O'Meara notched her first collegiate goal
