NORTON, Mass. - The Smith College soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with Wheaton College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match that featured 52 combined shots by both teams Saturday afternoon.
The Lyons threatened to end the contest in regulation when senior defender Amanda Dunton was able to put a header on a corner kick, but her shot went high with just two ticks left on the second half clock.
Â
Smith looked to score early in the opening half when first year midfielder Anna Gullace (Bryn Mawr, Penn./Friends' Central School) fired a shot ticketed for the Wheaton goal, but caught too much off the crossbar. She collected the rebound and took aim again, but Marcus turned it away at the 18-minute mark.
Â
Wheaton also had chances off set piece cornerkick plays with first year back Katie Kutzer putting a shot high over frame in the 44th minute and senior midfielder Chloe Troy firing wide right in the 54th minute.
Â
Senior midfielder Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass./Monument Mountain) and sophomore back Piper Thompson (Jersey City, NJ/NEST+M) both tested Marcus, following a corner kick, with shots within 40 seconds of another for the Pioneers, but both were denied in the 67th minute. Smith looked to break through again in the 86th minute of play, but first year midfielder Alex Kiernan's (Schwenksville, Penn./Abington Friends School) shot was stopped and Bazzano's follow-up was high.
