Kinnel's Late Goal Lifts Field Hockey Sixth-Straight Win

Box Score SPRINGFIELD - Junior midfielder Eva Kinnel (Newtown, Penn./George School) scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds remaining in the game as Smith won a thrilling 2-1 non-conference contest at Western New England University Wednesday evening. Smith has now won six-straight and improves to 8-5 overall, while the Golden Bears drop to 6-4.

Highlights
  • Following a scoreless first quarter, O'Meara put the Pioneers on top as she drove the ball to the net and was initially denied by WNE's defense. O'Meara would find the loose ball and knock it past the sprawling WNE keeper and into the back of the net 
  • Whyte sent the ball to a streaking Emily Campbell who was able to take a shot that deflected off Harper and into the back of the net to give Western New England their first goal of the game
  • With 11 seconds to play in regulation, Kinnel would take a shot that hit the post, though the ball would return to the stick of Kinnel, who made no mistakes on the second opportunity, and fired the ball into the net to give Smith the win
  • Western New England outshot Smith 20-10 in the contest. WNE took 12 penalty corners in the game, while Smith received just five
  • Smith's keeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) made 14 saves for the Pioneers
