Smith Soccer Battles to Tie with Emerson

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College soccer program played to a hard-fought draw against Emerson this afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.

The Pioneers are now 4-8-4 overall with a 1-5-3 mark in the NEWMAC. Emerson moves to 8-3-5, 5-1-3 NEWMAC.

Highlights
  • The Lions held a commanding 12-3 advantage in shots and 9-3 led in corners
  • Smith goalkeeper Noemi Howland (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) made seven saves
  • After an early corner for the Pioneers, Emerson's forwards had a breakaway down the field but Howland came out to make a miraculous save on a shot by Simmone Barragan-Shaw
  • Howland continued to make some impressive saves throughout the opening period to keep it a 0-0 match
  • The Lions earned two corners in the opening minutes of the second half which were defended successfully by Smith
  • Emerson had one final chance in the closing seconds but Lauren Larking's shot hit the post for the final 0-0 draw

Smith will close out the regular season on Saturday, October 29 when the Pioneers host MIT.
