Field Hockey Cruises Past Mount Holyoke 4-0

Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, MASS. - The Smith College field hockey team swept Mount Holyoke 4-0 in conference play on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers improves to 6-5 and 3-1 in conference play while the Lyons drop to 3-7 and 0-4 in league action.

Highlights
  • It was a quiet first quarter until Smith earned three penalty corners in a 25-second span
  • On the third corner with just seconds remaining, Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass./Smith Academy) posted a shot that was saved by Mount Holyoke goalkeeper
  • Annie Wimsatt (Westerville, Ohio/Columbus Academy) took control of the ball off of the rebound and sent it into the goal where Eva Kinnel (Newtown, Pa./George School) tipped it in to score the first goal for the Pioneers
  • Abbey O'Meara (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's School) claimed possession of the ball on the right sideline and navigated it to the middle of the circle where she took a shot that slipped past the goalkeeper
  • For the remainder of the quarter, the Pioneers brought an aggressive defense as Mount Holyoke received two penalty corners and three shots, two of which were blocked
  • Early on in the third quarter, Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) took possession of the ball and controlled it down the field, sending it to Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, Md./North Harford)
  • Peterson sent it back to Mellow who took a shot from the edge of the circle and found the back of the net to bring the score to 3-0
  • The Pioneers defense continued to hold off Mount Holyoke as the Lyons earned two corners 
  • With about five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Smith earned another corner where Wimsatt sent a pass to Kaylee Newbanks (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) who sent the ball past the goalkeeper, scoring her first collegiate goal 
  • The final quarter remained scoreless by both teams with the Pioneers recording five shots with three on goal
Notes
  • The Pioneers held the advantage with 22 shots and 11 shots on goal, while the Lyons posted six shots
  • The Pioneers attempted seven corners in the circle
