Smith Tennis Rolls Over Colby-Sawyer, 7-2

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team earned its first win of the spring season as it cruised past Colby-Sawyer, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon. 

Doubles
  • The Goshgarians got the first win of the day in the number one doubles position and got a quick 8-1 victory
  • In the number three position, Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) and Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) teamed up for their first win together this spring by a score of 8-2
  • Alexa Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) and Ashley Felix (El Paso, Tex./Americas) played a close match in the number 2 position. The pair got the early lead over the Chargers who then battled back to make it 6-6 in the set. Monos and Felix battled to the end before dropping the set 8-6. The Pioneers carried the momentum from their 2-1 lead in doubles into singles play

Singles
  • Alexa Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) got the first singles win of the day. She dictated from the baseline not giving her opponent an inch in her 6-0, 6-0 victory. 
  • Lili Goshgaian continued the string of wins for the Pioneers and earned her first victory in the number one position. 
  • Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) jumped to a quick lead in the number two position. She quickly won the first set 6-1. Her opponent made some adjustments in the second set looking to keep the match close, but Clara continued to raise her level of play to secure the second set, and clinch the match for Smith.  
  • Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) and Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) closed out the match for the Pioneers. Both Monos and Gibson dictated play from the baseline in a pair of dominating performances. Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) only dropped three games on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win. Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy) continued to show her versatile style of play and secured the 7-2 win for the Pioneers with her 6-2, 6-4 victory.
