Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College tennis team opened their spring season against Bates College at home yesterday. Across the board, there were strong showings by the Pioneers. 

In doubles, Lili Goshgharian and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) teamed up in the number one position. They jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Bates was able to tighten up the match. The Goshgarians fell behind, and at 7-6, they were able to earn the extra game with some exceptional play to force a set tie-break. Bates' number one team of A. Rozin and A. Friedman ended up clinching the doubles points in the one position. 

In the number two position, Ashley Felix (El Paso, Tex./Americas) and Alexa Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) showed some great patience as they worked their way into their match. The two used their strengths to dictate play until Bates jumped ahead to take the set 8-5. In the number three position, Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) and Elsa Hillis (Georgetown, Tex./Georgetown) teamed up against a strong number three team from Bates. Monos and Hillis strung together many great moments, before dropping the set 8-1. 

Heading into singles play, Smith was down 3-0. There were many strong showings throughout the line-up. In the number two position, Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) battled while playing some creative tennis to stay in the match.

In the number 5 position, Olivia Monos (Reading, PA/Wilson) also showed her perseverance. She was able to dictate from the baseline, and showed patience to create her opportunities before her opponent D. Williams took the match 7-5, 6-3. 

Smith plays again on Saturday, March 12th at home against Trinity College.
