Field Hockey Tops Clark 3-1 in Conference Play

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, MASS. - The Smith College field hockey team claimed their first conference victory over Clark University, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improves to 3-5 and 1-1 in conference play while the Cougars drop to 3-5 and 0-2 in league play.

How it Happened
  • Smith earned two corners early on in the first quarter, however both shots were blocked
  • After Clark was granted a penalty corner and attempted a shot, Gwen Tuckett (Cambridge, Mass./Dana Hall School) recorded a defensive safe for the Pioneers
  • With about five minutes remaining on the clock, Grace Moorhead (Cranston, R.I./The Wheeler School) took a shot from the left side of the goal where Clark's goalkeeper posted a save until Moorhead took a shot off of the rebound to find the back of the net 
  • Both teams kept each other out of the net in the second quarter where Smith goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) made two saves
  • During the third period, the Pioneers brought out a strong offense posting two shots in a seven-second span until Victoria Mellow (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) took a shot near the edge of the circle on the left side where the ball soared past the goalkeeper into the net
  • About two minutes later the Pioneers received a corner where Callahan Day (Shade Side, Md./Elizabeth Seton) took a shot that slipped by the Clark goalkeeper into the net to score a third goal for Smith
  • Five minutes into the final quarter, Clark's Erin Hynes was granted a penalty stroke where the ball went past Harper to get a point on the board for the Cougars 
  • Later in the period, Moorhead posted another shot and the Pioneers were granted two penalty corners where they were unable to record a shot, ending the game with Smith claiming the 3-1 victory over Clark
Notes
  • Smith goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn./Radnor) made two saves in the win
  • The Pioneers held the advantage with 18 shots and 10 shots on goal, while the Cougars posted six with four shots on goal
  • The Pioneers attempted nine corners in the circle
