SPRINGFIELD - The No. 5 seed Smith soccer team fell in the quarterfinals of the 2023 NEWMAC Tournament on penalty kicks at No. 4 Springfield by a margin of 3-2 on Tuesday evening. Smith's season comes to an end 6-6-5, while the Pride improved to 8-4-6.
The match went to a penalty shootout after 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime finished tied 1-1. The Pride advances to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals and will face No. 14 MIT on Thursday.

Madelyn Boyle's (Milford, MA/Milford) attempt was stopped by Ryan. Nicole Sweeney was the first shooter for Springfield, but her attempt hit off the post. Warner and
Sofia Romero (Stamford, CT/Stamford) converted for Smith in rounds two and three, while Springfield kept pace with successful attempts by Sonia Dugger and Gabby Scott. In round four, Ryan once again made the save and allowed Karly Suppicich to give Springfield a 3-2 edge.
Morgan Watson (Piedmont, OK/Piedmont) was the last hope for Smith to keep its season alive, but her shot sailed over the crossbar pushing Springfield into the NEWMAC semifinals on Thursday.
