Day Nets Game-Winner as Field Hockey Claims Caryl Newhof Classic

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College field hockey team captured its second consecutive Caryl Newhof Classic Championship with a 3-2 win over Westfield State Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0 on the year while Westfield State dips to 1-1. 

Coco Cornell (Arlington, TX/The Oakridge School) and Eva Kinnel (Newtown, PA/George School) were named to the All-Tournament Team, while Laura Dreher (Durham, NH/Durham) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. 

Highlights
  • After a scoreless first period, Smith was awarded a penalty stroke following a Westfield State foul. Dreher put the Pioneers ahead with her second goal of the year. 
  • Smith drew a penalty corner and peppered the Owls' keeper until Abbey O'Meara (Wilton, CT/St. Luke's School) doubled the lead with a shot from the top of the circle
  • WSU's Bre Foley scored on a corner with under five seconds left in the half to make it 2-1
  • In the fourth, the Owls tied the game on a tally by Kaleigh Murphy
  • Smith responded a few minutes later when Day scored her third goal of the weekend 

Inside the Numbers
  • Smith outshot the Owls 23-10 and held an 8-7 edge in penalty corners
  • Goalkeeper Rory Harper (Wayne, PA/Radnor) made seven saves for the Pioneers, while her counterpart Emma Gniadek stopped 13

Smith faces its first road test of the year when the Pioneers travel to Amherst Tuesday at 6:00pm.
