CARLISLE, Pa. - The Smith College cross country team finished second out of 19 teams in a competitive field at the Dickinson Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers entered the meet unranked and beat two nationally-ranked programs including No. 28 Carnegie Mellon and No. 35 Dickinson according to the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) polls.

The Pioneers tallied 95 points finishing ahead of Case Western with 103 points, No. 28 Carnegie Mellon (132), and Wesleyan (167). No. 34 Calvin claimed the overall victory team with 56 points. 

"Since this was the first weekend that wins over out-of-region teams count toward NCAA at-large consideration, we were thrilled to beat three such teams, all of whom are either ranked high in their region, or have a top-35 national ranking," said Head Cross Country Coach Ellen O'Neil. "Though it's still early in the season, this is an encouraging result."
