Soccer Falls to Emerson, 2-0, in NEWMAC Quarterfinals

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College soccer season came to an end on Tuesday afternoon as the third-seeded Pioneers were upset by No. 6 seed Emerson. The Lions will face either Springfield College or WPI in the NEWMAC Semifinals on Thursday.

  • The visitors claimed an early lead less than three minutes into the contest when they were awarded a penalty kick after a foul by the Smith defense inside the box
  • Linae Bezdek converted the opportunity for her seventh goal of the year
  • Smith's chance to tie the game came in the 72nd minute when a foul was drawn right outside the box. Una Keller (Davis, CA/Davis) took the free kick, but Amara Schaub made an outstanding save and deflected it over the crossbar
  • The visitors put the game out of reach in the 82nd minute as Zoe Simmons headed in a pass from Katie Wojcik
  • Skylar Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) made one save for Smith, while Amara Schaub stopped three shots for the Lions

  • Emerson advances to the NEWMAC semifinals for the fourth time in program history
