Tennis Sweeps Singles in 8-1 Win at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, RI - The Smith College tennis team swept singles play en route to an 8-1 victory over Salve Regina in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 9-4 overall, its most wins since the 2003-04 season, and 4-2 in the NEWMAC. 

Match Highlights
  • The first point of the day was won by Lili and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) in the number one doubles position. After dropping the first game of the set, the Goshgarian's reset and honed in on their objectives to cruise to an 8-2 win. 
  • First year duo of Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) teamed up in the number two position. The pair got off to a strong start, going up 4-1. The duo from Salve battled back making the score 4-3. Hauser and Jung readjusted their tactics and closed out the match, earning the second point of the day for Smith, with their 8-5 win. 
  • The lone point for Salve came in the number three doubles position. The pair of Pinto and Farell from Salve played steady doubles, disrupting the Smith Team of Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) and Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, PA/Moravian Academy). Wang and Gibson adjusted throughout the match, but not quick enough to get the doubles sweep, dropping the match 8-6. 
  • Smith took the sweep in singles play, only dropping 9 games in all six matches. The 5th and deciding point for Smith was won in the number three singles position where Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Madison Murphy of Salve.
