NORTHAMPTON -
Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and
Aranne Jung (Los Angeles, CA/North Hollywood) both recorded points in singles and doubles to help Smith College cruise to a 5-0 win over fifth-seeded Mount Holyoke in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament first round match on Tuesday.
With the win, fourth-seeded Smith improves to 12-5, its most wins since 2003, and is headed back to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinal for the second consecutive season. Mount Holyoke sees its year come to a close at 11-8.
Match Highlights
- Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) earned Smith's first point with an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles over Annika Chai and Kirat Kaur of MHC.
- Hauser and Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) followed with an 8-2 triumph over Rache Allen and Natali Kostandinovic, while Jung and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) posted an 8-4 win over Cal Smith and Kate Vavra at the No. 3 position.
- The Pioneers made quick work of the Lyons in singles as Hauser was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Chai at No. 1 and Jung followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over C. Smith at No. 4.

Smith will face 10th-ranked MIT and top-seeded MIT in Saturday's NEWMAC Tournament semifinal.
