Field Hockey's Season Ends with Loss at WPI

WORCESTER - First year Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) scored for the Smith College field hockey team as the Bears fell to WPI 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in a NEWMAC clash. Smith goalkeeper Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) made nine saves bringing her season total to 114. With the loss, Smith's season comes to an end with an overall record of 8-10 and 3-7 mark in the NEWMAC.

First Half Highlights
  • Park made critical saves against Leah Uglevich's two attempts, maintaining a defensive stand in the opening minutes. WPI broke through at 3:16 when Lauren Meinhold scored the first goal of the match, assisted by Eve Martineau, putting the Bears behind 1-0.
  • WPI extended their lead to 2-0 at 7:11 with a goal from Uglevich, assisted by Arie Lang. Despite the Bears' attempts to counter, including a wide shot by Halie Yung (San Jose, CA/Lynbrook), WPI increased their advantage to 3-0 with a goal by Abbey Powers at 14:05. Smith responded just before the quarter ended. Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) scored off a penalty corner taken by Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton) at 14:51, narrowing the deficit to 3-1 as the quarter concluded.
  • The second quarter began with WPI extending their lead when Meinhold scored her tenth goal of the season at 21:38, pushing the score to 4-1. The Bears responded with offensive pressure, highlighted by Gracie Hylton's (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) two shot attempts, although both went wide. Defensively, Park made a key save against Powers, maintaining the scoreline as the quarter concluded with Smith trailing 4-1.
Second Half Highlights
  • Smith began the third quarter looking to cut into WPI's lead. Hylton took a wide shot at 35:14, marking a moment of offensive push for Smith. Park played a crucial role defensively, making saves against shots by Lang and Uglevich, while Ellie Szostalo (Gorham, ME/Gorham) added a defensive save against Powers.
  • The Bears' efforts held WPI scoreless throughout the quarter, maintaining defensive pressure to prevent further scoring. The quarter concluded with WPI holding a 4-1 lead over Smith.
  • Smith began the fourth quarter with a determined effort to close the gap. Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford) attempted to initiate the scoring with a shot that went wide at 46:18. 
  • WPI's pressure intensified as Aiden Arrington (Philadelphia, PA/Gwynedd Mercy) made a crucial save on a penalty shot by Ella Reeners at 50:35, followed by two more saves on shots by Lang shortly thereafter. Emma Barton of WPI nearly extended their lead, but her shot hit the post at 55:19.
  • Smith pushed forward with a penalty corner taken by Day at 58:28, leading to another shot by Peterson that went wide. The quarter concluded with the Bears unable to alter the scoreboard, closing with a 4-1 deficit.
