CAMBRIDGE, MA. - The Smith College tennis team concluded its season on Saturday with a 4-0 loss to nationally-ranked No. 8 MIT in the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament.
The Engineers (15-2) secured the doubles point with victories across all three positions. In singles play, Smith (9-10) battled, but MIT clinched the match with wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 6 singles.
Sophomore Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and junior Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) faced a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles, falling 6-1.
The Goshgarian sisters, Lili and Clara, showed resilience at No. 2 doubles but were edged out 6-3. At No. 3 doubles, Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) and Sabrina Wang (Beijing, China/Princeton) competed fiercely before dropping a 6-2 decision.
In singles, Hauser challenged MIT's Fiona Lee at the top spot but was defeated 6-4, 6-1.
Sauber competed at No. 3 singles, falling 6-3, 6-3, while Wang faced a tough opponent at No. 6 singles, ending with a 6-4, 6-2 loss.
Matches at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles were unfinished due to MIT clinching the necessary points for victory.
Smith concludes their 2024-25 season with a 9-10 overall record, marking significant progress and competitive play throughout the year.
