NORTHAMPTON - UMass Boston (1-0-0, 0-0-0) secured a 1-0 victory over Smith College (0-1-0, 0-0-0) with the decisive goal scored in the first half Friday afternoon.
The first half saw a strong defensive performance from
Sky Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional), who made five saves to keep the game close for the Bears. Despite their efforts, UMass Boston's Andrea Rivera found the net in the 31st minute, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Smith had opportunities to equalize, including shots from
Una Keller (Davis, CA/Davis) and
Kaleigh Quinn (Bristol, RI/St. Mary Academy), but they were unable to convert before the end of the half.
The second half began with Smith maintaining a strong defensive stance as
Sky Smith (Carlisle, MA/Concord-Carlisle Regional) made crucial saves at the 51st and 74th minutes, keeping the Beacons at bay. Keller led the offensive efforts with multiple attempts, including a shot in the 66th minute following her own corner kick, though it went off target. Quinn and
Jenna Marsh (Barnstable, MA/Cape Cod Academy) also contributed offensively, with Marsh's shot at 87' being stopped by UMass Boston's Janiya Matier, as the Bears ended the half scoreless despite several offensive opportunities.
