Bears’ Rally Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Trinity

NORTHAMPTON - The Smith College field hockey team was unable to complete a fourth quarter rally as the Bears fell to Trinity College, 4-3, Wednesday evening. The Bantams start the year 1-0 as head coach Jess Bergen earned her 100th career win. Smith drops to 2-1 on the year as the Bears three goals are the most scored against the Bantams since the 1993 season.

First Half Highlights
Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD/North Harford) equalized the score for the home team at 7:11, capitalizing on a penalty corner with assists from Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) and Callahan Day (Shady Side, MD/Elizabeth Seton). Despite a flurry of offensive efforts from the Bears, including shots by Bosket and Halie Yung (San Jose, CA/Lynbrook), Trinity edged ahead with a goal from Brooke Dibiase at 11:05. The period concluded with Smith trailing 2-1, as they consistently pressured Hayley Gable with multiple attempts on goal.

The second quarter began with Trinity applying pressure through consecutive penalty corners, with Maeve Hymovitz executing three between 19:43 and 20:55. Despite this offensive push, the Bears' defense held firm, successfully blocking a shot by Dibiase at 20:48. The quarter ended without any change to the scoreboard, as both teams remained scoreless through the period.

Second Half Highlights
The third quarter began with Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) stepping up to make crucial saves against consecutive shots from Trinity's Nina Falkson, including a penalty corner at 31:12. Despite Park's efforts, Trinity extended their lead with goals from Dibiase at 31:53 and Aly Janssen at 40:24, bringing the score to 4-1 by the end of the frame.

Maya Zager (Portland, ME/) ignited a comeback effort for the Bears in the fourth quarter, scoring her second goal of the season at 51:10 with an assist from Day. Less than three minutes later, Zager struck again at 54:30, bringing her season tally to three goals and narrowing the gap to 4-3. Despite a strong defensive effort, including a critical save by Park at 53:06, the Bears were unable to equalize before time expired.

Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/) made four saves for the Bears as Smith registered two corners compared to eight for the Bantams. Trinity held a 14-11 advantage in shots.
