At Smith College Athletics, we believe every athlete, coach, staff member, and fan has a story worth sharing. To celebrate those stories, we're excited to launch a new weekly series: Feature Friday.
Each Friday, we'll spotlight a different member of our community and dive deeper into their perspective, experiences, and connection to Smith Athletics.
And for our very first feature, we couldn't think of anyone better to start with than our — Athletic Director Kristin Hughes.
"The most memorable moments in my career at Smith College have always come when our athletes and teams accomplish something they've never done before.
It could be a breakthrough performance, a historic win for the program, or reaching a new level on the national stage. In other words, it's when our student-athletes achieve things people once thought weren't possible. Those moments — when teams, athletes, and coaches rise to the occasion — are the brightest highlights of my time here. They remind me why I take so much pride in this role and why I'm grateful to be part of their journey.

A Lifelong Passion for Sports
My love for sports began with my dad. He took me to countless athletic events growing up, where I learned just how much emotion and passion go into every game.
What stood out most was his commitment to promoting women's sports. At a time when it wasn't as common, he was a strong advocate for women and girls — a perspective that has shaped how I operate as a leader today.
As a young coach, I also had the privilege of working summer camps, including one in Tennessee with the legendary Pat Summitt. What struck me was how genuine she was, how hard she worked, and how no job was ever too small for her. At the height of her career, she still treated everyone with respect and gave so much back to the game. That lesson has stayed with me and continues to guide the way I lead.

Beyond the Office
When I'm away from the courts and fields, you'll most likely find me near the ocean. Being by the salt water has always been relaxing and restorative for me. And for a lighter note — I'll admit I have a weakness for peanut butter cups and a soft spot for Winnie the Pooh. A random pair, but both never fail to bring me joy.

Looking Ahead to the New Year
There's something special about the start of the school year. As students return and coaches settle back into their offices, the energy in our building rises. You can feel the excitement of people chasing success together.
That energy is contagious, and I find it incredibly motivating. We have outstanding student-athletes and dedicated coaches who have been working tirelessly, and I can't wait to see what this year brings. I encourage everyone in our community to come out and support our teams. This fall, we get to watch programs that are hungry, talented, and ready to achieve great things — and there's no better time to be part of it.
Welcome back. Let's make it a year to remember."Â
