Field Hockey Falls in Double Overtime to Wellesley, 3-2

NORTHAMPTON - Madeline Hamstra scored 44 seconds into the second overtime to lift the Wellesley College field hockey team to a 3-2 double overtime win over Smith College on Saturday afternoon. The Bears drop to 7-8 on the year with a 4-2 mark in the NEWMAC. The Blue are now 4-10 overall and even their conference record to 3-3.

Game Highlights
  • The Bears broke through at 6:36 of the first quarter when Megan O'Connor (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth Abbey School) scored her ninth goal of the season, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. Earlier, the Bears created the first chances of the game, with Anouk Bosket (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland/Belfast Royal Academy) putting a shot on goal at 2:22 before O'Connor delivered two penalty corners and Ari Martinez (Provincia de Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Adveniat) sent a shot wide. Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer) answered Wellesley's first push by saving attempts from Marguerite Greene and Alex Butulis after a penalty corner. Wellesley pulled even at 13:54 on a goal by Butulis off an assist from Madeline Hamstra, and the quarter ended tied 1-1.
  • Both teams played through scoreless second and third periods as the game entered the fourth tied at 1-1
  • The Bears converted their first penalty-corner chance of the fourth quarter into a 2-1 lead at 50:29, as Sam Sparling (Croton on Hudson, NY/Croton Harmon) scored after van Brunschot had a shot saved by Hannah Simmonds. The Bears pressure continued less than four minutes later, when O'Connor inserted another penalty corner and Simmonds saved back-to-back attempts from van Brunschot and Hylton. Wellesley answered at 56:10, with Rachel Carson scoring off an assist from Caitlin Stratton to tie the game at 2-2. The Bears then had to defend two late Wellesley corners, and Park made saves on Madeline Hamstra and Alex Butulis to keep the score even through the end of regulation.
  • The Bears generated the only recorded shots of the first overtime, putting six attempts toward goal while holding Wellesley without a shot in the segment. After Wellesley earned a penalty corner at 68:33, the Bears came back with their own corner from O'Connor in the final minute. Gracie Hylton's (Easton, PA/Moravian Academy) shot went wide at 70:00, and the overtime ended with the score still tied 2-2.
