REDLANDS, Calif. — Smith fell to the University of Redlands 5-2 on Wednesday at Verdieck Tennis Center. The Bears secured a singles victory at the No. 4 position and won the doubles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Smith secured the doubles point with victories on courts two and three.
Ayla Hauser (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) and
Natazya Simunyola (Lorton, VA/South County High School) posted a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles over Sophia Truong and Vrishitha Kumar.
Marielle Sauber (The Woodlands, TX/The John Cooper School) and
Dayana Caluna (Plainfield, NJ/College Achieve) then clinched the point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles against Maisy Reynoso and Eve Laurent. Redlands managed a win at No. 1 doubles, as Maegan Deng and Lindsey Whelan overcame
Ava Emrich (Smyrna, Delaware/Tower Hill School) and
Heidi Cambron (Sherbrooke, Canada/Champlain College Lennoxville), 6-2.
In singles play, Redlands responded strongly, winning five of the six matches. Maegan Deng delivered a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hauser at No. 1 singles, followed by Whelan's 6-1, 6-2 win against Emrich at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Reynoso edged out Cambron in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.
Smith's only singles victory came from Simunyola at No. 4 singles, where she defeated Kumar 6-1, 6-4. Redlands secured their final points with Truong defeating
Tabitha Bastress (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union High School) 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles, and Laurent besting Isabel Benitez Barron 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, sealing a 5-2 overall win for Redlands.
