Sports Performance: The Program

Sports Performance Logo

We have a few facilities at our disposal: Our varsity weight room on the 1st floor of Scott Gym, The Indoor Track and Tennis facility, Scott & Ainsworth Gymnasiums, and any of our 5 athletics fields. We are lucky enough to be able to train all of our teams in their own individual blocks on predetermined days that work well with each team’s practice and game schedules.

Our Mission is to minimize the potential for injury, improve athletic performance, and maximize each athlete's potential through an individual and holistic approach. We accomplish this mission by heeding our department’s guiding principles:
  • To be science led
  • To be athlete centered
  • To strive for growth and improvement
  • To have defined processes to reach goals
Through these guiding principles, we aim to address our training principles which are:
  • Multi-joint Compound Movements
  • Multi-planar movements
  • Bilateral and Unilateral movements
  • Core (including hips, abdominals, and lower back)
  • General strength and Specific Strength
  • Explosive training
  • Nutrition, Sleep, and recovering effectively

Due to the high academic rigor of Smith College, we take special care in how we manage the schedule of training and provide resources to our athletes. Athletes can be more susceptible to injury during times of academic stress, during these times we pay even closer attention to how the athletes are handling the physical stress from practice and training. We are flexible with long class schedules, and are committed to helping to find sleep and nutrition solutions for athletes.

Smith Strength and Conditioning is made up of the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, two Graduate Assistants, interns that may be hired year to year.  This helps us be flexible in our schedule and give each of our teams focused and individual attention.

Staff development is one of our top priorities. This comes from many places, including books, clinics, conferences, and practice. Each Graduate assistant gets practice from their responsibility of the year round strength and conditioning needs of 3-4 teams during their 2 years here. Interns will shadow and assist with the testing, coaching, and managing of a variety of teams with all of the coaches.

Finally, as a strength and conditioning department, we look to make the athletic department better and contribute to it in any way we can. We aim to be visible at events, we do training and programming clinics for club teams, and as part of our responsibilities we manage the Olin Fitness Center. The Olin is the campus fitness center that is open to all students, alumnae, faculty and staff. In this space we strive for our patrons to have access to most types of training. Every year we try to get closer and closer to this goal through various upgrades that are determined by the needs of the space at that time.
