Joel Bierwert, a former standout diver and athlete himself, is entering his first season as the Smith Head Diving Coach after previously having the same role at Mount Holyoke College.

Philosophy
Fundamentals come first with Bierwert. He has a relentless approach to improving technique through creative drills and precise instruction. Bierwert believes that when fundamentals are mindless and effortless, high level performances are a natural byproduct as it allows the diver’s talent to shine. He loves to help people achieve their dreams and he is motivated to help take the student-athlete as far as they want to go and push themselves. Bierwert understands it’s the athlete that does the work and that his role is to be a vital support system in helping them be the best version of themselves. He enjoys being a part of each step of that process.

• Volunteer Diving Assisant Coach - Northampton High School (2 years)
• Division 1 Diver - Auburn University
• 2x Western Mass. Regional Champion; State Runner-Up

Personal:
Bierwert loves all sports and has tried almost all of them. He is a die-hard Patriots, Celtics and Auburn football fan. Bierwert is a professional metal worker for a company called Salmon Studios. He played for USA Team Handball for about 6 months which included 1 international friendly game! Joel is the son of Kim Bierwert, who was the head swim and dive coach from 1977-2017 and was inducted into the Athletics’ Hall of Fame in 2025 posthumously.
