Faria, Belton Star Against MIT

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Smith College took the first set, but could not find a way past MIT on the road, as they fell 3-0 (25-21, 19-25, 12-25, 12-25) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night.

The Pioneers (1-14, 0-6 NEWMAC) rallied from a 14-11 deficit in the first set to tie the game at 16, then rattled off nine of the next 14 points to take the set 25-21.

The second set was back-and-forth, as Smith grabbed an early 5-2 lead only to see MIT (14-9, 4-2 NEWMAC) knot the score at eight. MIT took a 17-14 lead to force a Smith timeout, and the Engineers finished off the set 25-19 and level the match at one set apiece.

The third set saw Smith pull to within 11-7, but MIT allowed allowed the Pioneers five more points the rest of the way in taking the third set 25-12, and in the fourth set, MIT jumped out to an early 11-6 lead en route to taking the set 25-12.

Rosa Drummond continued her strong play with an 11 kill effort, complimented by one solo block and a block assist. Laurel Belton also poured in 15 kills.

Courtney Faria set up the offense with 32 assists, her second highest total of the season. Bethany Ashworth set a new career high with 24 digs, topping her total by one against Plymouth State on October 2.

Smith will head to Plymouth, N.H. this weekend to face the host Panthers, as well as Keene State College. The match against Plymouth gets underway at noon, followed by the match against the Owls at 2 p.m.
