Bludevich Belter Blasts Bears

October 19, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Senior Bryce Bludevich grabbed the game's only goal in the 40th minute to lead the Smith College soccer team to a 1-0 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy on Tuesday.

Playing on a chilly afternoon, the Pioneers (3-9-1, 1-5-1 NEWMAC) grabbed their first conference win of the season in defeating the Bears (5-8, 1-6 NEWMAC) for the third time in four years.

Smith nearly grabbed the lead in the 35th minute when Lucie March's shot was spilled by Coast Guard goalie Mary Mills, but Mills recovered to stop the followup attempt from Elizabeth Jarrett.

Five minutes later, Bludevich unleashed a screamer when March teed her up from just outside the 18 yard box and the senior fired an unstoppable shot off Mills' fingertips.

Jen Chang, deputising in goal for Lindsey Gregor, made seven saves, none of which was more critical than when she leaped to tip a shot from Lynn Schrayshuen over the cross bar early in the second half.

As the clock wound down, Chang made two more saves, first denying Coast Guard leading scorer Shannah Shelton with 12 minutes left, then keeping out a long range attempt from Schrayshuen in the 88th minute.

Mills made five saves for Coast Guard, who dropped their fifth match in six games.

Smith will hit the road for their next contest, taking on Wheaton College on Saturday, October 23.  Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.  Coast Guard will play host to MIT.
