Soccer Closes Out Season With Loss to WPI

October 30, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Hailey Taylor's 39th minute goal was enough to lift WPI to a 1-0 win over Smith College in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon.

Smith (4-11-1, 1-7-1 NEWMAC) brought good early pressure, as Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall) beat the offside trap in the 22nd minute, but her shot skewed wide.  Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) kept the Pioneers in the game with a double save on Megan Forti, parrying away her shot from 10 yards, then forcing the rebound header wide.

The Engineers (8-9-1, 5-4 NEWMAC) grabbed the games only goal when Taylor bundled home the ball after a corner kick.

The score remained at 1-0 at halftime, and WPI tried to add to the lead when Tori Howland rattled the crossbar seven minutes into the second half.

Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) tested WPI 'keeper Maddie Miller with a long range effort with 18 minutes to go, but the Pioneers could not find an equaliser.

Before the game, seniors Ella Hartenian (Arlington, Mass./Arlington), Sarah Pedicini (Revere, Mass./Revere), and Bryce Bludevich (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) were honored for their contributions to the program.  Smith ends the season with a 4-11-1 mark, a one win improvement from 2009.  WPI earned the No. 5 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament, and will play Wheaton College in the quarterfinals.
