Rosa Drummond made her return to the lineup after missing three matches, but the Smith College volleyball team fell to league leading Springfield in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) volleyball action on Tuesday night.
Drummond, who had not suited up since the match against Colby on September 25, piled up eight kills, three service aces, and and four block assists for the Pioneers (1-13, 0-5 NEWMAC), who fell 3-0 (15-25, 24-26, 13-25).
Smith held a 4-3 lead in the first set, but the Pride went on a 14-3 spurt to take a 17-7 lead and force a Pioneer timeout. Two straight service aces by Drummond pulled Smith to within 24-15, but the Pride ended the set on a kill from Brittany McNally.
In a back-and-forth second set, Smith built a 6-3 lead on three straight Springfield errors and a kill from
Blair Bell, and stretched the lead to 12-5 when Cassie Seymour had a service error. The Pride reeled off nine straight points to take a 14-12 lead, only to see Smith battle back to take a 19-18 lead when
Hayley Bezubkaset up Drummond for a kill.
Laurel Belton put the match within reach for Smith with a kill that gave the Pioneers a 24-21 lead, but the Pride (18-2, 5-0 NEWMAC) rattled off five straight points to take the set and a 2-0 lead.
The third set saw Springfield take a 9-4 lead on an ace from Kim Giaquinto, and though
Laurel Belton (San Bernardino, Calif./Aquinas)'s kill pulled Smith to within 13-9, Springfield pulled away to take a 17-10 lead on a Smith attacking error, then scored eight of the next 11 points to take the match.
Courtney Fariahad nine assists and seven digs for Smith.
Bethany Ashworth also added seven digs.
Smith will be off for a week, not returning to action until October 12, when they hit the road to face Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 7 p.m.
