Gregor Outstanding In Defeat To Clark

October 08, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass--Lindsey Gregor's heroics in goal were not enough to keep Smith College from falling to a 2-0 defeat to Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Friday afternoon.

Jenna Zarou netted a goal for Clark (5-7, 2-3 NEWMAC) in the 13th minute when she took advantage of a Smith turnover outside the penalty area, dribbled past a defender and fired past Gregor.

Smith responded with pressure, nearly equalizing in the 26th minute as Kaitlin Johnson got a hold of a bouncing ball after a corner kick, but shot right at Clark goalie Joanna Clark.

Grover, who finished with eight saves, made acrobatic save after acrobatic save to keep the game close.  A strong dive to the left kept Allison Kennedy off the scoreboard, in the 52nd minute, and Gregor then leaped to push a a shot by Lucia Pantuosco over the crossbar.

Grover made another outstanding save to push a shot from Pantuosco out of the top corner, and Smith (1-8-1, 0-4-1 NEWMAC) looked to have a decent shout for a penalty when Emma Coffin was bundled over in the box.

Erin Peete added a second for Clark with 15 minutes left in the game when Pantuosco set up Erin Peete for a close range goal.

Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, October 12, facing non-conference foe Lyndon State College (Vt.).  Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30.
