Soccer Falls To UMass-Dartmouth on Late Goals

September 11, 2010

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Two goals 80 seconds apart in the second half lifted UMass-Dartmouth to a 2-1 victory over Smith College on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (0-2) took a 1-0 lead just before halftime.  Fiona Jones (Afton, Va./Nelson County) netted the first goal of her collegiate career in the 44th minute, latching onto a long ball from Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, Fla./Oak Hall), and firing past Corsair 'keep Tanya Braga.

Theurer had a chance to double the lead three minutes into the second half, but Braga denied her on a one-on-one opportunity.

Erica Jonasson leveled the score in the 63rd minute, heading her own rebound that had come off the crossbar.

Just 1:20 later, Sam Silvia gave the Corsairs (2-2) the lead for good when she picked up the ball from 35 yards out and fired a rocket past Smith goalie Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast).

Gregor finished with eight saves between the pipes for Smith, while Braga made five for UMass-Dartmouth.

Smith will play host to Keene State on September 16, at 4 p.m.  UMass-Dartmouth will begin conference play with a trip to take on Rhode Island College on September 19.
