Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team notched its first win of the season, splitting a tri-match with Elms College and Colby-Sawyer College.
The Pioneers (1-2) defeated the Blazers 3-0 (29-27, 25-12, 25-15), before falling to the Chargers 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-17).
Against Elms, the Pioneers staved off a challenge in the first set before dispatching the Blazers with little opposition in the second and third.
First year Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and senior Laurel Belton (San Bernardino, Calif./Aquinas) racked up nine kills each, while Belton added 23 digs. Courtney Faria (Pocasset, Mass./Bourne) paced the offense with 10 assists.
Colby-Sawyer defeated Elms 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-15), and then against Smith, defeated the Pioneers in three sets.
Senior Shakwana Etienne (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) led the front line with six kills, while Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Cortez) added 10 assists. First year Rebecca Broadhurst (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) led Smith defensively with 29 digs.
The Pioneers will open NEWMAC play with a trip to Wellesley on Sept. 14.
