September 15, 2010

Box Score CHICOPEE, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team scored five times in the first half en route to a 7-0 victory over Elms College on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers (2-2) overpowered the Blazers (0-4) in the first half, opening the scoring on a goal from Nia Spooner (Bronx, N.Y./Fieldston School) just 1:22 into the game.

Lena von Schorlemer (Frankfurt, Germany/European School of Frankfurt) sandwiched two goals around another from Ali Stein to make it 4-0, and Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) closed out the first half scoring with a penalty stroke.

First years Rebecca Rosen (Harrington Park, N.J./Northern Valley) and Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) added the gloss with their first collegiate goals in the second half.

Sora Harris-Vincent (Plainfield, Vt./U-32), Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard), and Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) all spent time in goal for Smith - none of the three goalies faced a shot.

With the win, Smith concludes its four game road trip to open the season.  The Pioneers will begin conference play with a visit from Mt. Holyoke College on Friday, September 17, at 4 p.m.  The game will be preceded by the dedication of Smith's new turf field.
