Smith Volleyball Battles Coast Guard

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team fell to the United States Coast Guard Academy 3-1 (11-25, 25-23, 13-25, 20-25) on Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

After falling the the first set, Smith (1-10, 0-4 NEWMAC) rallied to win the second set and tie the match.  The Pioneers built a slow lead, going up by as much as 19-15, only to see the Bears (12-4, 3-1 NEWMAC) reel off seven of the next eight points to take a 22-20 lead.  Smith replied with five of the next six points to take the set.

The Bears took the third set, and raced out to a 12-3 lead in the fourth, before Smith pulled to within 16-14, but the Bears finished off the match outscoring Smith 9-6.

Laurel Belton (San Bernardino, Calif./Aquinas) had 10 kills for Smith, while Sibyl Brown (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) had nine.  Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, Ariz./Cortez) had 14 assists.

Lauren Bloch had 11 kills and 17 digs for the Bears, while Karen Matic had 44 assists and 26 digs.

Smith will take part in the Johnson & Wales Invitational on Saturday, October 2.  Coast Guard will take on non-conference foe Mitchell College on Wednesday, September 29.
