NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team closed out their NEWMAC schedule on a high, defeating Clark University 6-3 on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers improved to 2-5 overall, and 2-5 in the NEWMAC. Clark drops to 0-8, with an 0-7 NEWMAC record.
The Cougars had taken a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) and
Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) took Smith's only point at doubles with a 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles over Kristen Cullity and Maggie Swann.
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and
Rachel Canfora (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) were close to a second doubles point at No. 2 but where defeated 9-7 by Julia Bergeron and Virginia Cooke, and
Jaimi Inskeep (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville So.) and
Clair Oblamski (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fell at No. 1 to Gaby Suriano and Sarah Sachs.
Smith took the match by capturing five of the six singles points. Oblamski got the ball rolling with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sachs at No. 2, and Weick kept it goint with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Bergeron at No. 3. Inskeep took a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Swann at No. 4, and Canfora gave Smith their fifth point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Cooke at No. 5.
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) made it emphatic with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6. Clark took their only point in singles when Suriano beat Dubin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1.
Smith will conclude the fall season when they partake in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament from October 14-16.
