Game Preview: Volleyball vs. MIT

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team (7-10, 1-4 NEWMAC) will look to take another step closer to a NEWMAC tournament berth when they play host to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (17-5, 3-2 NEWMAC) on Tuesday night.  The action begins at 7 p.m.

Last Meeting: Smith won the first set, but MIT won the next three for a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 12-25, 12-25) win on October 12, 2010.

Last Smith Win: As part of a tri-match with Springfield College, Smith knocked off the Engineers 3-0 (30-25, 30-20, 30-18) on October 22, 2005.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers are coming off a 1-3 showing at the MIT Invitational.  After Smith defeated Mount Holyoke in their opening matchup, the Pioneers lost a tough five set match against Vassar when they won the first two sets before losing the next three.  Day two saw the Pioneers fall to Bryn Mawr and Wellesley to finish in fourth place.  Blair Bell (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair Kimberly) and Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) were named to the All-Tournament team.

MIT Overview: The Engineers started the season off well, winning their first 11 matches of the year, but since then, MIT has played just over .500, winning six of their last 11 matches.  In their most recent outing, they defeated Babson College 3-0, but before that, MIT had lost four of six.

Smith Player to Watch: Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) has been the Pioneers season leader in several categories, including kills (210), service aces (22), and digs (156)

MIT Player to Watch: Cecily Joujon-Roche averages 2.03 kills per game, while hitting .374.

Did you know? MIT is not the only school that uses a three letter initialism and the Engineers mascot - WPI also goes by the the Engineers.
